A membrane switch is a thin, flexible, multi-layered switching mechanism that serves as a bridge between the user interface and electronic circuits. Unlike traditional mechanical switches, these systems are typically produced by printing conductive inks, such as silver or carbon, onto flexible films.

Basic Layer Structure
A membrane switch generally consists of five main layers:

Graphic Layer: The top surface that the user sees, containing symbols and colors (usually made of polycarbonate or polyester).
Upper Circuit Layer: A flexible film that has conductive paths printed on it.
Spacer: A perforated insulating layer that keeps the two circuits apart.
Lower Circuit Layer: The conductive surface where the circuit is completed when the button is pressed.
Adhesive Backing: A strong adhesive layer that secures the keypad to the device.

Lexan (polycarbonate) labels offer high impact resistance, chemical durability, and excellent transparency. Since they are produced using back-surface printing, the text and graphics on them do not fade or wear off. They are ideal for outdoor and heavy industrial conditions.

In LED backlit systems, ultra-thin SMD LEDs are integrated under the keys or specific areas. This increases the visibility of buttons in low-light environments and provides visual feedback. Due to its thin structure, it does not disrupt the device design.

Using a metal dome provides physical and auditory feedback (a click sound) to the user when a button is pressed. This "tactile feedback" ensures the user is certain the action has occurred. It also offers millions of press cycles.

Capacitive touch panels do not involve mechanical movement, so they do not wear out and are very long-lasting. They can work behind glass or acrylic surfaces, allowing the device to be completely sealed and have a modern look. They detect precise touches.
